In recent times, the cost of college education in the US has become expensive. Equally, the Covid-19 pandemic has affected college education. Like other sectors, academic institutions are counting financial losses, and it is only getting worse. Some institutions, however, have resorted to virtual education in some programs, a move seen necessary to keep the academic pipeline active. With no glimmer of hope for returning to normalcy, embracing virtual learning is an essential alternative to the traditional in-person learning model during and after the pandemic.

The current global crisis has led to massive layoffs and closure of businesses, and it’s only logical to reason that most students are likely to miss out on college education due to financial constraints. According to the National Center for Education and Statistics (NCES), the average cost of studies in the USA’s higher institution stood approximately $46,014, $26,261, and $17,797 in 2017/2018 non-profit institutions, private for-profit institutions, and public institutions, respectively. These costs translate into a 31 and 21 percent rise in education cost in public and private institutions, respectively, from the past decade.

Moreover, the contemporary political climate, including the “Trump effect” (Taparia, 2020), has cast more doubt on the significance of pursuing a college education in the USA by international students. Specifically, the president’s visa declaration not only left continuing and prospective students contemplating the future of their studies (Anderson & Svrluga, 2020).  As institutions reflect adapting to the new normal, one modality of cutting rising expenditure is to adopt virtual learning fully. This move will allow students to continue their education in an online platform and embodies the much-needed accessible, safe, and affordable education.

Virtual learning has not been taken seriously, save for a few institutions that embraced the model for long-distance learning (Strauss, 2020). The pandemic is an impetus for an academic institution to consider adopting virtual learning. The move to embrace virtual education is not void of limitations. There is a need to revamp lesson plans, obtain necessary technology, and redistribute resources since most investments have been made in in-person education (Taparia, 2020).

Malicious people have also taken advantage of inadequate privacy measures on some online interfaces, precisely on zoom, to obstruct and derail effective online teaching. Similarly, critics have questioned the efficacy of virtual learning in disseminating discussion-based courses that necessitate intimate settings. Students themselves have felt that online learning does not offer quality education compared to in-person attendance.

Universities have not been able to embrace online education strategically. Ideally, most fears of eventual redundancy of faculty and exclusivity of programs as extensive resources have been located in physical settings. However, universities do not need to abandon in-person education altogether but create parallel online programs that would help a population that finds value. There are already strong examples showing that online classes can attain pedagogical quality, e.g., Georgia south launched an affordable IT degree (Georgia Southern University, 2019).

The pandemic has forced many universities to rethink their model of education delivery. In contrast, other universities are already rethinking, opening their door for in-person classes. Despite the financial losses that drive schools to consider reopening, the nature of Covid-19 is still elusive, and a move to reopen academic institutions could prove disastrous.

The pandemic and the current political climate provide universities with an impetus to embrace virtual education as an accessible, safe, and affordable education mode. Despite the criticism and lack of universities’ preparedness towards adopting virtual learning for most of their programs, adopting virtual learning positively impacts the future, including accessibility and affordability.
